Draft Procedures
1. Director should have help from either another Director or an assistant.
2. Only head coaches are allowed to attend the draft.
a. No assistant coaches (if you want a specific assistant coach, you must draft the coaches kid).
b. No players or parents.
3. Go over the responsibilities of being a coach
a. Review points given by League president.
4. Inform the coaches of the draft procedures
5. Pass out to the coaches:
a. List of their peer coaches at this draft with contact information.
b. List of players that came to try-outs
c. List of players to be put in hats
d. List of team names
e. Draft sheets
6. Put players not at try-outs in hats
a. Review list with coaches to determine A hat versus B hat.
7. Draw Draft Order
8. Draw Team Names in reverse draft order and write them on the draft sheets
9. Rate coaches sons/daughters and write them in on the draft sheets.
a. If 1 age in a division:
i. Plays ball for a middle or HS team 1st round pick
ii. Does not play school ball 3rd round pick
b. If 2 ages in a division:
i. Plays basketball for a middle or high school team
1. Older age group 1st round pick
2. Younger Age Group 2nd round pick
ii. Does not play school ball
1. Older age group 3rd round pick
2. Younger Age Group 4th round pick
c. If 3 ages in a division:
i. Plays basketball for a middle or high school team
1. Older age group 1st round pick
2. Middle Age group 2nd round pick
3. Younger Age Group 3rd round pick
ii. Does not play school ball
1. Older age group 4th round pick
2. Middle age group 5th round pick
3. Younger Age Group 6th round pick
10. Identify any siblings in the same division. They must go together on the same team and will count as two consecutive draft picks. If one sibling is picked (or drawn from the hat) the second sibling will take up the next available draft pick on that coach’s draft sheet.
11. For Try-out “No-shows”
a. Director and coaches separate these players into 2 groups
i. “Good Player”: called A Hat
ii. Remaining Players: called B Hat
12. The Drafting Process Starts:
a. Coach picks based off the draft order from the players that came to try-outs or out of A hat then B hat. Each selection is written on draft sheets.
b. The last coach to pick in the first round will be the first coach to pick in the second round and this will continue until all the players are assigned to a team.
13. Trades can be made after the draft process until the meeting ends.
14. Directors need to get a copy of the draft to Donna, Director of Membership.
15. Coaches are to contact the players immediately to let them know what team they are on. (tonight if possible)
