Draft Procedures

1.                  Director should have help from either another Director or an assistant

2.                  Only head coaches are allowed to attend the draft.

a.      No assistant coaches (if you want a specific assistant coach, you must draft the coaches kid). The exception is teenage coaches/coaches without a player may be allowed to bring their assistant.

b.      No players or parents.

c.  If the head coach is not available for the draft, then the head coach can send someone to draft his/her team or have the director draft his/her team.  If they send someone and he/she has a kid playing, then it is not automatically assumed that the person drafting is the head coach’s assistant (see #9 below).

3.                  Go over the responsibilities of being a coach

a.       Review “Points to Review” and “Role Model” found under Coaches Corner on the website.

4.                  Inform the coaches of the draft procedures

5.                  Pass out to the coaches:

a.     List of their peer coaches at this draft with contact information.

b.      List of all players in the division noting those that attended evaluations and those that did not attend.

7.                  Select Team Names in reverse draft order and write them on the draft sheets

8.                  Rate coach’s sons/daughters and write them in on the draft sheets.  Coach’s kids will be rated by all coaches present and placed in the appropriate draft round based on ability.  Any disagreement will be settled by the division director who has the last word on where coaches' kids get slotted in the draft.

9.                  Discuss any requests for specific assistant coaches.  Assistants can only be requested on draft day and must be agreed upon by a majority of the coaches present.  The division director will have the last word on whether an assistant coach will be allowed or not prior to drafting.  If allowed, then refer to #8 for placing the assistant coach’s player.

10.               Discuss any requests for specific players (i.e. “friend” requests).  Non-coach players can only be requested on draft day and must be agreed upon by a majority of the coaches present.  The division director will have the last word on whether a requested non-coach player will be allowed or not prior to drafting.  If allowed, then refer to #8 for placing the player.

11.               Identify any siblings in the same division. They must go together on the same team and will be rated by all coaches present and placed in the appropriate draft round based on ability.  Any disagreement will be settled by the division director who has the last word on where siblings get slotted in the draft.

12.               Every evaluation “No-show” who is known to coaches will be discussed and rated and made available at any time in the draft.  Unknown player names will be placed in a hat and will be randomly drawn after all other players are selected.

13.               The Drafting Process Starts:

a.      Coach picks based off the draft order from the players on the draft sheet.  Each selection is written on draft sheets.

b.      The last coach to pick in the first round will be the first coach to pick in the second round and this will continue until all the players are assigned to a team.

14.               Trades can be made after the draft process up until the end of the meeting that is called by the director.

15.               Coaches are to contact the players immediately or as soon as possible, to let them know what team they are on.
